  1. The largest of Madison's four lakes, Mendota is a popular venue for many water sports in the summer, as well as ice sports--particularly ice fishing--during the winter. During the summer Madison residents make their way over to the Memorial Union Terrace whenever they can for its picturesque location on the southern shore of Lake Mendota. Lake Mendota is typically frozen by mid December.
