  1. This is August 15 and a few days on either side. When all the leases in the central city turn over at the same time, many students and other renters leave vast piles of unwanted belongings on the curb as they change apartments. These items are often taken home by others as the population garbage picks the piles. When someone asks where you got an item, you reply "Hippie Christmas." Posted by: TScout on Jul 22, 2008 (8) (1)
  2. Most leases in Madison, Wisconsin go from August 15th to August 14th of the following year. Many students are stuck in no man's land from noon on the 14th to noon on 15th while the owners are turning over the apartments. Some people camp out overnight guarding their earthly possessions. In the aftermath of this multiple-day circus plenty of rancid old pieces of furniture are left out on the curb for opportunistic hippies to snatch. Posted by: madmax on Aug 16, 2008 (2) (0)
  3. I call it Hippie Hanukkah because it lasts at least 8 days.

I have found a box of coins (both foreign and domestic), catcher's mitt and bats and softballs, papason chairs, CDs, tape players and many other useful things.

One thing I've noticed is that almost everyone throws out a fan. Posted by: Oakelf on Apr 15, 2009 (1) (0)
  4. Whether it makes them hippies or not, many UW students wait for Hippie Christmas to furnish their new (but not very new) apartments. It costs a lot of money to furnish a place and college students are often strapped for cash. The trick is to find something that isn't drenched beyond repair. Many finds are quite salvageable. 5. I've moved in and out of Madison more than once and have furnished many an apartment this way....and furnished others too as I return the product to the curb before my next move. Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 26, 2009 (0) (0)
  6. I was shocked by the amount of discarded, even unopened food. Hasn't anyone ever heard of the food pantry? Actually, some of the food was from Second Harvest - makes me wonder if they should have more strict criteria for receiving food. Posted by: preventwaste on Aug 15, 2009 (0) (0)
  7. Some great Hippie X-Mas finds my friends and I have found: an unopened bottle of gin, X-rays of someone's back, and a very dirty hookah, in addition to the various pieces of furniture I've saved from destruction.

Also, at the end of the spring semester, the dorm garbages are also filled to the brim. Posted by: exjentric on Aug 17, 2008 (1) (2)

Hippie Christmas dumpsters with plenty of mattresses and boxsprings soaked with God knows what. What is one man's trash is a hippie's treasure.
