  1. The Lake Delton Dam Disaster occurred on Monday, June 9, 2008. After days of thunderstorms spawned tornadoes and dumped many inches of rain on Southern Wisconsin in a very short period of time, a man-made embankment on which County Road A was situated was washed away by Lake Delton's high water, allowing the lake to drain violently into the Wisconsin River, and taking several homes with it. (The dam next to the embankment did not fail.) Local residents were shocked to see Lake Delton completely empty in most areas, with only the lake's sandy bottom and decaying tree stumps remaining--leftovers from trees that were cleared when the man-made lake was created about 80 years earlier. Local businesses that rely on the lake were devastated, and several homes were washed away and totally destroyed--some belonging to homeowners with no flood insurance. (It is alleged that homeowners tried to obtain flood insurance, but were unable to because the Village of Lake Delton had recently and voluntarily opted out of a Federal flood protection program in which participation is required by some insurance companies before offering homeowners flood insurance.) The event is referred to as "Lake Delton Dam Disaster" mostly because it describes the event, but also as a sort of tip of the hat to Frank Black (a.k.a. Black Francis, former lead singer of the punk rock band "Pixies") who wrote and recorded a song titled St. Francis Dam Disaster that describes in a powerful way the worst civil engineering disaster of the 20th century--the failure of the St. Francis Dam in Southern California in 1928.
