  1. The name of the first European settlement of the La Crosse area. The "Prairie" was settled in 1841 by Nathan Myrick as a fur trading post. Myrick made the trip to the area from the then important trading post Prairie du Chien (which means "Prairie of the Dog"), which is now a much less prominent town than La Crosse.
