  1. This is a common shorthand spelling of La Crosse. While growing up in La Crosse I--as well as several people I know--would write it "LaX," but I've never heard it spoken that way. When uttered (EL-EY-EX) it may bear too much resemblance to the airport in Los Angeles, California.
