  1. Don't get excited people, the French fur traders were simply the first Europeans to make the trip to the area now called La Crosse. They made their first trips to the La Crosse area in the late 17th Century via the Mississippi River. The fur trade essentially decimated much of what was a very abundant supply of small mammals. (Certain large mammals like cougars are also seldom present nowadays.)
