Past Words of the Day

A West-Side Manhattan neighborhood that at one time, was just what its name suggests. However, since the 1990s it has somehow managed to evolve into a hip and fashionable place to be, complete with an active nightlife and many trendy nightclubs.

Freedom Cage is the brilliantly oxymoronic name given to the small chunk of asphalt designated as the place of protest outside the Pepsi Center for the Democratic National Convention. The place is separated from the main event by several rows of fences and is tucked away out of sight, effectively deterring any meaningful protest.

As the old adage goes: "Freedom isn't free." That's because it's caged.

Local slang for a type of hard-shell clam, later, a fictional suburb of Providence featured on the "Family Guy" television show.

The infamous NYC street vendor hot dog, generally Sabrett's brand shoved haphazardly into a soggy bun and topped with a variety of gloppy condiments. The consumption of this NYC grab-and-go staple is almost an urban rite of passage and the Manhattan version of Russian Roulette.
