  3. New Yorkers will also refer to all of New York City as "the city" when they're away from home. They often assume that non-New Yorkers know that NYC is "the city." Even when New Yorkers are well aware of their companions' ignorance of this term, they'll employ it frequently to reinforce New York's dominance as the greatest city--if not the only city--in the world. This attitude is not considered charming outside of New York City.
