1 Definition
  1. A nickname for Salem, Massachusetts, because of the Salem Witch Trials, which took place in and around Salem in 1692 and 1693. More than 150 people were accused of being witches, 19 of which were hanged for the crime of being a witch and one of which was pressed to death for refusing to enter a plea.
Much study has gone into what caused the hysteria and why it continued to the extent it did. Salem offers many museums and attractions connected to the witch trials for both the serious scholar and the interested tourist. The Peabody Essex Museum (161 Essex St.) houses hundreds of documents from the trials in its Phillips Library. Particularly popular around Halloween are the Witch House (310 1/2 Essex Street), home to one of the witch trial judges, Justice Jonathan Corwin; the Old Burying Point (53 Charter St.), resting place of another trial judge (and ancestor of author Nathaniel Hawthorne), Justice John Hathorne; and the Salem Wax Museum of Witches and Seafarers (288 Derby St.).
