  1. The Kentucky Oaks is a Grade I, stakes race for thoroughbred fillies that is run the day before the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. The winner recieves a garnet of lillies, rather than roses.

    The Oaks are typically more frequented by locals to enjoy the pre-Derby atmosphere without the hassle of the Derby-day crowds at the Downs.
