  2. "The Getty" may refer to a campus in the Brentwood neighborhood of West Los Angeles, hard by the I-405 freeway; or to the Getty Villa, in Malibu, on the Pacific Coast Highway.

The Brentwood campus includes a museum of art, and other institutions funded by the J. Paul Getty Trust, an American institution established by American oil tycoon Jean-Paul Getty, chartered in California, and registered as a not-for-profit organization under the United States.

The "Getty Villa," in Malibu, is a full-scale replica of a Roman villa, which displays a collection of things from classical antiquity, many of which were acquired lawfully*, most of which are authentic**.

    ____________

*The Getty's former Curator of Antiquities, Ms Marion True, has been indicted by the Italian government for conspiracy to traffic in illegal antiquites during her tenure at the Getty. The Getty has since agreed to return stolen art to Italy.

**The Getty Kouros -- on exhibit at the Getty Villa -- is widely believed to be fake. The Getty's exhibition offers an account of the controversy, and no longer claims it to be authentic. Its attribution is: "Greek, about 530 BCE; or modern forgery."
